“Multi Language Club” — my entry to the Tokyo TDC Annual Awards 2025, one of the most demanding typography competitions in the world.
“Multi Language Club” argues that language is less a fixed alphabet than a moiré: shift your angle and the meaning bends.
It’s pure black and white, pure type. The word LANGUAGE is distended into a deep optical tunnel built from fine parallel line-screens until the letters seem to warp and recede; “PARA PARA PARA” marches across the top, “MULTI MULTI MULTI” along the bottom, with “LANGUAGE CLUB” and “9PM” tucked in like a flyer for a night only typographers would attend.
I entered it into the Tokyo Type Directors Club Annual Awards 2025 — one of the most demanding typography competitions in the world, drawing thousands of entries internationally. It didn’t place, but putting work into that arena, against that bar, is part of the practice.
